He was a healthy newborn but had a few
issues and needed to be cared for in the intermediate nursery. He was unable to maintain a normal heartbeat and temperature. Both were very low and required constant supervision. He also was unable to to eat from a bottle
instead and needed a feeding tube.
On
his 14th day in the nursery, and in anticipation of a dicharge, a newborn hearing screening (N.H.S.) was
done. Camryn failed in both ears. It is common for premature babies to be born with fluid behind their ear drums which restricts their hearing. It is also common for that fluid to dry up over time. When this happens, it will cause a baby to fail their newborn hearing screening. We were told by all of the staff to not worry, it was probably fluid and should dry up on its own. The hearing screening was repeated
the next day and again, he failed in both ears. We got the same lecture as we had gotten the day before.
Before his discharge on
day 16, the staff in the nursery made Camryn an appointment with
University Of Louisville Audiology for July 20th. Camryn was one month
and 3 weeks old on that day.
Camryn went to his appointment where the
N.H.S. was repeated again and again he failed in both ears. After that
test was failed, Camryn then went through a test called an A.B.R. (Auditory Brainwave
Response) done and that test showed conclusively that Camryn was
Severely deaf in the left ear and profoundly deaf in the right ear.Our hearts SANK!
