Ashley Taylor is a Type I diabetic. On November 25th, when Ashley learned she was pregnant, her Blood sugar was very much uncontrolled and her A1c was 11.8. That is extremely high for a pregnancy. On December 10th, 2012 Ashley was admitted to the hospital with what was diagnosed as HyperEmesis (which just means a LOT of Vomiting.) She stayed one week and was discharged. On December 20th, she again was admitted for Hyper Emesis and stayed for 6 more days. Admitted again on December 29th for 3 days. Just before New Years, Dr. Thomas Tabb put Ashley on the insulin pump.
All in all there were 14 hospital stays during the pregnancy and at times, the vomiting became extremely severe for both Ashley and the fetus. It was during the hospital stays that Ashley learned the professionals from both the team of obstetricians and GastroInstestinal Team felt she had a condition called Gastroparesis. That condition could not be diagnosed correctly during the pregnancy because it consisted of testing that involved radio-active food and that wasn't safe on the fetus so Ashley endured the pregnancy in and out of the hospital and on so many medications that even now, we can't recall them all.
On May 29th, 2012 Ashley was at home and asleep. She woke from her nap realizing her blood sugar was low. She attempted to get out of bed to get to her telephone but she had no strength to stand and fell to the floor. She landed on her stomach. She was able to get to her phone and called me.
We called 911 and Ashley was taken to the hospital. Once we got there, the doctors tried to find the babies heartbeat but the call had put the unborn under too much stress. When they finally did find the heartbeat it was extremely low and the decision was made to perform an emergency cesarean delivery.
Camryn was born shortly afterwards.
